Rila Monastery with New Ethnographic Exposition
After an 18 year pause the Rila Monastery has a new ethnographic exposition.
In one of the halls the visitors can see carpets made in the Bulgarian carpet centers of Kotel and Chiprovtsi which became famous for their craftsmanship in the 19th century. Here there are also tufted rugs and hand woven cushions.
The different ethnographic regions of Bulgaria are represented with an exposition of their national dresses. They are to be found in the second hall as the exhibits in the exposition are from the 19th and 20th century. Here visitors will find Bulgaria's ethnographic treasure.
During the high tourist season the monastery’s kitchen and eating area is also opened to the guests every day. Here visitors will find the old monastery furnace, the mill, as well as various utensils connected to the monks’ everyday life.
The guests of the Rila Monastery can also climb up the Hrelyova Tower which is the oldest preserved part in the monastery, built out of stone around the year 1335.
