Bansko is situated at the foot of the Pirin Mountain and right below the Pirin National Park. It is one of the biggest and most attractive mountain resorts in Bulgaria and during the last years it has been developed as the best and most modern ski resort. It is situated at the foot of Pirin Mountain, 160 km away from Sofia.
Surrounded by Pirin, Rila and Rhodopa mountains, Bansko is a climatic mountain resort with a short summer and long winter. The average temperature during january, the coldest month, is -1.9C. Snow falls are abudant, providing a constant winter snow cover up to 2 m thick. The skiing season along the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends in mid-April.
The six new quad chairlifts on the mountain and one of the world's longest ski runs back down to the village have made Bansko ski resort the leading Eastern European ski destination. What is more, on September 30th 2010 Bansko was announced the Winter Capital of the Balkans.
