New bridge to connect and develop regions in Bulgaria and Romania
A new bridge over the Danube River, joining border regions in Bulgaria and Romania is expected to help the development of these areas, International Herald Tribune reported.
An article named Bridge to a New Era for Bulgaria and Romania says that though construction has not begun yet, both countries hope the project would “help one of Europe’s least developed regions”.
The project took eight years of planning and is now finally expected to be launched, IHT reported.
The new bridge would be the second connection of the two countries across the river. It would be executed through the use of EU funds. According to the IHT the Danube has separated rather than connected Romania and Bulgaria.
Co-operation on the project was the first time Bulgaria and Romania tried to emerge from their isolation and join the EU, IHT reported.
Locals in both Bulgaria’s Vidin and Romania’s Calafat were optimistic about the project and the benefits it would bring.
IHT said that the efforts of the two countries to join the EU together in January 2007 brought them closer together. Romania and Bulgaria never experienced serious conflict but were never close neighbours either, IHT reported.
