The town of Blagoevgrad is an important educational, cultural and economic center in the southwestern part of Bulgaria. It is situated in the Struma River valley at the foot of Rila Mountain and is in close proximity to Pirin Mountain, while through the town passes Bistrita river. In the town of Blagoevgrad there are three universities – the American University, the Southwestern University and the College of Tourism.

The town of Blagoevgrad is located 30 km from Macedonia, 80 km from Greece and 90 km from Serbia, and the distance to Sofia city is about 100 km. The town is connected with central Greece and Bulgaria on road E79, while "Struma" highway is under construction.

In the town there are several churches, several theaters, an opera house, a history museum, a zoo and a cinema complex. In the Old Town of Blagoevgrad are preserved unique houses with Renaissance architecture. From here starts the park "Bachinovo" which is set along the Bistrica River, where are to be found an indoor pool and waterpark, many playgrounds and restaurants. Not far from the city there is also a ski slope.
