The village of Kostenets is one of the oldest and most beautiful settlements in Bulgaria, remains dating back to two centuries BC. It is located at the foot of Rila Mountain on the northern slope, 78 km southeast of Sofia, 6 km south of Kostenets and 35 km east of Borovets. The altitude varies from 650 m in the northern part to 725 m in the southern part. Hyperthermal mineral springs with temperatures ranging from 46 to 73°C are typical for the area.

Near the village is the resort of Villas Kostenets. There is the starting point for hiking trips to the Gurgulitsa Hut, Belmeken Hut, Musala Peak, Zavrachitsa Peak, Malyovitsa Peak and Marichinite Lakes. Kosten waterfall is located in the resort and all mountain routes in this part of Rila start from it. The height of the water fall is about 10m.
