Located along the river Oselna in a beautiful mountain area, the village of Golyam izvor is set in Northern Bulgaria and is part of Teteven region in Lovech Municipality. In the vicinity of the village are to be found remains of an ancient Roman fortress, and many ceramic vessels from Roman, Slavic and Thracian times. Different sources from the village state that it was founded during the 13th century by refugees from Kiev. There once existed a convent, which was part of the nearby Glozhenski monastery. The village is also known with the fact that in year 1872, Vasil Levski founded here the first revolutionary committee in the country. In year 2007 to the territory of the village were added several deserted villages placed nearby.

Among the places can be visited here is the house where was founded the First Regional Revolutionary Committee, which is now a museum with a large ethnographic collection, and the church "Holy Ascension", and an old school which is now also a museum.
