Tyulenovo, Kamen Bryag, Yaila – along the rocky shore of the eternity

2007-08-09   |  VisitBulgaria.NET, by Georgi Georgiev

Most Bulgarian and foreign tourists accept the Bulgarian seaside as golden sand, nice beaches, sea resorts, big or small hotels, hot summer, parties, taverns and night clubs. This is an excellent way to spend your summer holiday in Bulgaria, but there is also a different seaside, with rocky, unapproachable and almost sinister shores, which are extremely beautiful, romantic, and tempting. The story is about the coastline north of cape Kaliakra.

This is the site close to the villages of Tyulenovo and Kamen Bryag. It seems the time here has stooped, and only the noise of the farming machines in the field, or the engine of a small fishing boat, merging from the rocks, can take you out of the feeling.

Tyulenovo village is about 100 km north from Varna and about 40 km away from Kaliakra cape. It is nothing special at first, but when you reach the shore, you will see the waves of the emerald blue sea, crushing in the fantastic cliffs. There are many underwater caves and the site is very popular among scuba divers. There is no sand stripe but this helped for the preservation of the unique nature in the region. Here one can see a flock of cormorants sitting on a small rock in the sea. The village (Tyulenovo means “the seal site”) was named after the monk-seals, that used to inhabit these waters 50 years ago. Old fishermen say that once upon a time the seals entered the fishing nets, eating the meshed fish. When they caught a young seal, they whipped its fins gently to teach the animal not to rob. No one can say if this was true but it is a pity there are no seals basking in the sun any more. Dolphins can still be observed, but as every wonder they are seen rarely. But you will definitely be surrounded by sea-gulls, herring-gull, crows, swallows, and other birds, some of them are rare species.

After you walk on the edge of the cliffs, you could take your way south to Kamen Bryag. The cliffs there are beautiful and fantastic just like in Tyulenovo. The blue sea meets the blue sky, leading the eyes far in the infinity. There are ledges and rock niches, which are asylum for those who want to put up tents there. The architectural reserve Yaila is situated next to Kamen Bryag. There was a prehistoric town with more that 100 dwellings cut in the rocks. Later there was an ancient fortress. Nowadays ruins of the fortress wall, a temple and tombs can be seen there. The site was a famous vine-growing region in the past. The remains of the ancient winery prove that. “St Konstantine and Elena” cut in the rock monastery is situated somewhere amidst the abounded climbing plants, that cover the inner rocks.

Many other sanctuaries and shrines were found out there as well. These holy ruins put many questions for discussions about the life, the culture, the manners and the customs of the people who lived there and paid homage to the forgotten gods. Probably only the sea, the wind and the rocks know the answers.
