Sofia – The Cheapest Tourist Destination in Europe

2011-01-18   |  BULGARIAN PROPERTIES

Sofia tops the ranking for the cheapest European cultural destinations which includes 40 major cities. The data comes from a research of the company Price of Travel. The last place in the ranking is occupied by Zurich.

The rating is made on the basis of a brand new methodology. What is taken into account is the following:

• One night in the cheapest bunk at the least expensive hostel with a good location and good reviews
• Two public transportation rides per day
• One paid/famous attraction per day
• Three “budget” meals per day
• Three cheap, local beers (or wine) each day as an “entertainment fund.” Non-drinkers might have dessert and coffee or attend a local music performance instead, so this is a general benchmark that should be proportional for each city.

A day in Sofia costs 20.75 USD, according to Price of Travel. Second comes the city of Krakow, where the daily allowance for tourists is about 6 USD more compared to Sofia. Third comes Bucharest with a little over 28 USD. The most expensive tourist destinations are in Scandinavia. A night in Oslo will cost tourists 102 USD, in Stockholm – 94 USD, in Copenhagen – 84.5 USD and in Helsinki – 81.6 USD.
