10.09.2010 New Border Checkpoint Opened Between Bulgaria and Greece

dnevnik.bg

A new border checkpoint Ivaylovgrad – Kiprinos was opened today by the presidents of Bulgaria and Greece Geogri Parvanov and Karolos Papoulias.

The construction of the checkpoint and its infrastructure were financed by Greece and the joint border passage and its infrastructure were financed by the Bulgarian budget. The border checkpoint connects the towns of Ivaylovgrad, Krimovgrad and Momchilgrad in Bulgaria via second-rate road II-59 with Dimotika, Orestias and Alexandropoulos in northeastern Greece, as well as Edirne – Republic of Turkey with Svilengrad and Haskovo via the Republic of Greece.

The idea for opening the new border checkpoint belongs to Karolos Papoulias and dates back to 14 years ago when he was Greece’s Foreign Minister.

According to President Parvanov the effect from the opening of this checkpoint, as well as of the others, will be that Greece will remain one of Bulgaria’s most important trading partners and one of the main investors in the country. He also expressed his hopes that the tourist flow in both directions will exceed 1 million people.

In his speech the Greek President Karolos Papoulias noted that the opening of another checkpoint confirmed the mutual will for cooperation between the two countries in both cross border areas. We want to improve the infrastructures, to support the local economy and the tourism in a very difficult moment – the economic situation is not favorable not only in our two countries, but in Europe as a whole, added the Greek President.
