NEW BORDER CROSSING WITH GREECE TO BE OPENED NEAR KARDJALI

2007-08-28   |  BulgarianProperties, Martin Nedkov, Kardjali Office

After two and a half years of construction, the Bulgarian part of the road leading to Greece through Makaza Pass, south of Kardjali has been completed.

The new road is 17 km long and will make the distance between the regional center Kardjali and the Aegean coast as short as only 80 kilometers. The project is funded and closely monitored by the EU as it is part of the very important Trans European corridor E85 – from the Baltic to Aegean Sea. According to the treaty between Bulgaria and Greece, the border post south of Kardjali should be functioning by the end of August 2008.

The Greek part of the road is not completed yet but the work has been implemented by a consortium of Greek companies, which have constructed “Via Ignatia” motorway in Northern Greece, connecting the major cities of Alexandroupolis and Thessaloniki.

Two other border posts between Bulgaria and Greece are under construction in Rhodopy mountains. Those are Ivaylovgrad – Kiprinos and Rudozem – Xanthi. The Bulgarian and Greek governments are discussing the opening of several other smaller border posts, which will make communication and travel between the two countries easier, as both sides will benefit from increased trade and improved intercultural relations.
