Englishmen Welcome Parvanov in Belyakovetz

Standard Daily, 23rd September 2005

On the Tzarevets Hill, in Veliko Turnovo (northern Bulgaria), the President delivered a speech on the occasion of the Independence Day and gave many autographs

"The Bulgarian nation succeeds when it is headed by politicians of strong character. With the declaration of its independence our country joined the sovereign European states and entered the big European family," said Georgi Parvanov in Veliko Turnovo yesterday. He visited the old capital of Bulgaria on the occasion of the Independence Day and delivered a 20-minute speech in the pouring rain.

The head of state underlined several times that the Bulgarians must be proud to live in a free country. After that he laid a beautiful wreath before the stone pyramid on the Tzarevets Hill where the manifesto declaring the independence of Bulgaria (1908) was read.

On his way from the main city square to the historical hill the president was greeted by dozens of tourists who didn't allow him to continue before giving them autographs.
The head of state and head of the General Staff Gen. Nikola Kolev joined the procession heading to the Mother Bulgaria monument.

Later on, President Parvanov visited the nearby village of Belyakovetz where a group of English settlers welcomed him. The seven British families have been living here for five years. Parvanov went to see the church of St. Paraskeva, which was built 130 years ago by master builder Kolyo Ficheto.

The celebration of the independence day in Veliko Turnovo continued with a visit of PM Sergei Stanishev, who was expected to attend the service at Holy 40 Martyrs church at 5 p.m.
