Sofia and its great night life - a tour of the top clubs

2014-04-09   |  www.gruborpub.com

We bring to your attention some of favourite nightspots in Sofia, with something to appeal to all tastes.

1. Tequila Club

Tequila is definitely one of the highest profile night clubs in Sofia. The club has a refined crowd of successful young people, listening to some of the best Bulgarian and international DJs. As one of the most popular clubs in the city, it is advisable to book a table before arrival. The party usually starts at 00:30, but if you have a table reserved you can arrive around 23:30.

2. Yalta Club

Yalta is the original modern Bulgarian night club. This is the birthplace and the centre of the clubbing culture in Bulgaria. It opened for the first time back in 1959, and remained the coolest place to see and be seen during the following 30 years of communism. And it still is! After the fall of communism in 1989, Yalta was the first place in Bulgaria where electronic music was played and the first Bulgarian club where there was a foreign DJ. Today some of the brightest stars of the house scene, such as Victor Calderon, Rojer Sanchez, Timo Maas, Paul Oakenfield and Hernan Cataneo are regular guests behind the club’s decks.

3. Mascara

Mascara is another spot you should not miss when you are in Sofia. If you are a lover of house music then is your place for fun, from the late hours of night right through ‘til morning. There are a couple of different rooms in Mascara. The main hall is arranged in dark brown, beige and golden, with dark wood high tables and bright marble with high and comfortable chairs and stools. The chandeliers are luxurious and classy, between the sofas there are beautiful fairy-lamps. Mascara also has two VIP rooms for about 20 people each. The first one is in minimalist style, the second (the so-called Russian Room) is in authentic wood, with leather chairs and sofas. The music is mainly vocal and commercial house - each Wednesday DJ Steven and DJ Giorgio B are there and on Thursday there is a guest DJ.

4. Blender Club Sofia

Blender Club mixes diverse cultures, tastes, ideas, concepts, styles and experience gained from various locations around the world and at home. Blender is a mix between a bar and a club. It is a place with a warm friendly atmosphere, cool bartenders and plenty of cocktails. At Blender you can enjoy different kinds of music from house, disco, funk, afrobeats to electroswing, something for everyone with influences from all around the world.

5. Sin City

The largest nightclub in the Balkans, Sin City is well known for the sheer scale of the place and the variety of entertainment on offer. The club is already a favourite nightspot for foreigners and Sofia’s social elite. Up until a few years ago, Sin City was best known for chalga, but today you can enjoy all kinds of music, which varies from night to night.

6. Briliantin

Briliantin is one of the best known clubs in the city. Here you can enjoy the retro music from recent years and decades past. There are huge plasma video walls where you can watch one of the 5,000 videos of every single song played by the DJ. The place is small though, so if you decide to check out Briliantin you'll probably need a reservation.

7. Alcohol

Alcohol is another of Sofia’s finest dusk ‘til dawn venues. A place for the lovers of different kinds of music - house, hip hop, disco, rock, retro but if you are looking for traditional Bulgarian folk music - chalga - then this place is not for you. One annoying thing is that regardless of time there is an entrance fee of 5 lev. Also note that if it is a holiday or there is a special party organised, the admission fee may be higher.

8. Maymunarnika (ex ‘Pork Pie’ Open Аir Club)

Maymunarnika (the Monkeyhouse) is a little bit different compared to the other clubs. Located in the heart of Borisova garden, by the lily lake, it is a long-standing venue with a serious party history. Its latest is the best yet: a chill park bar in the day, and an open air stage with live shows and parties at night. Throw in beer at socialist prices and music by Bulgarian bands in the shade of the trees and it can only be a good deal for a night out in Sofia. The only disadvantage to this place is that it can only be used only during the warm months of the year.
