12 beaches and a marina on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast received the Blue Flag international certificate awarded for high quality, cleanness and safety. This year marks the Blue Flag program’s 25th anniversary.

The beaches are certified by an international jury which includes representatives of the Ecological Program and the World Tourist Organization with the UN, the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC) and a few other prestigious international bodies.

In 2012 the beaches that were awarded a Blue Flag certificate are in the resorts of Albena, Dyuni, Sunny Day and Elenite, the southern and northern beaches of Sunny Beach, Harmony beach in Sozopol, Pomorie - east beach, the New, Eastern and Central beaches of Sveti Vlas and Bunite in Varna. The Marina Dinevi yacht port has also been awarded a Blue Flag.

The Blue Flag campaign was created as a partnership between the Ecological Education Foundation and the European Commission as now it already encompasses about 50 countries worldwide. Its goal is to award clean and safe beaches helping the protection of coastal areas.
