The New Bulgarians: Briton man and Thai woman created a small organic farm in Vishovgrad

2016-04-01   |  borbabg.com

BULGARIAN PROPERTIES' clients have stared a new life in Bulgaria - see how.

It is the Bulgarian yogurt that brought to Vishovgrad the Briton Marc Routh and his Thai wife Pasuda. The two live in the village near Pavlikeni for year and a half, renovating their lovely old house and turning their yard into a miniature organic farm for their own needs.

Marc Routh is 53 years old, and his wife is 42. Both are smiling, positive, youthful and very hospitable. They met 14 years ago when Marc taught English in the exotic country. Like in a classic love story, his future wife turned out to be his student. Only that Pasuda was far from being among his best students but on the contrary - "terrible student," says Mark laughing. This is how the love between them started and soon they become a family. For four years they lived in Thailand - at first in a town 40 kilometers away from Bangkok and then in the town near the Burmese border in northern Thailand, where they bought a house they still own. Then in order for Pasuda to take a British citizenship and be able to travel freely anywhere in the world, the international family settled England for a brief period of time. The two dreamed about Bulgaria since their Thai period, says Marc Routh.

"We have heard about the Bulgarian yoghurt, but we did not know anything about your country. Gradually, however, we learned a lot from the internet and we had a dream, though initially we only joked that we will come to live here", says the man. Some two years ago they contacted a Bulgarian real estate agency and came for a ten-day trip to Veliko Tarnovo region with the intention to consider ten houses and make one of them their future home, because the properties in England were very expensive for them.

"On the third day we liked the third house and we stopped looked around. We never hesitated, because the air here is unique, the sun is generous and your nature is unique", says Mark. When they bought their new house in Vishovgrad, the property was in pretty good condition as construction, but naturally the family engaged in an overhaul that continues today. They cleaned the yard, leaving the shed, the barn and the solar water well, they painted the facade of the house white, repaired the roof, completely changed the wiring and made a fireplace. They further shaped the decorative septic tank, got water sewerage which however occasionally stops, most probably because of the high hill on which the house is located.

The family’s biggest dream is to form a mini organic farm, and last spring the two made the first steps towards that. In fact, for 20 years already Mark is a member of a large international organization that brings together producers of organic products. In our country this organization is still in its infancy, but already has about 1,000 members, says the Briton, who is an absolute fan of environmentally friendly lifestyle.

"The general concept of such organic farms is that they do not use any chemicals and fertilizers, and the earth is treated with bare hands and as few interventions as possible so that the soil can retain the structure," explains Mark. He further adds that last year he and his Thai wife planted potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables, as well as some exotic herbs - Tarus, coriander and lemongrass... The fertilizer they used was natural - from the decay of dry grass in certain parts of the yard specifies the 53-year-old Mark and adds that the house has only a housecat. They do not take care of animals since he and Pasuda often travel to Thailand, which means they are absent for long periods of time.

"Whether we will stay here forever? This is the question", says the former English teacher. This depends on the means by which he and his wife will have in the future. The family has savings, which however are used for the house expenses, and Mark is now looking for a job to complete the family budget.
