Located in Pleven municipality in northern Bulgaria, the town of Belene is situated 24 km from the town of Svishtov, 45 km from the town of Nikopol, and 60 km from the town of Pleven. Near the town is located the natural park Persina, which includes a group of islands and is the only park in the Bulgarian section of the Danube river bank.
Belene is the only Bulgarian town on the Danube, which does not serve as a port and the reason for that is that the bottom of the river here is shallow. The nearest port close to the town of Belene in Svishtov. There is also a border checkpoint. Since year 2010 there is also a ferry terminal in the town of Nikopol.

The town of Belene is an old settlement with many architectural monuments. Among the places to be seen here are the ancient Dimum fortress on the Danube river, ancient "Throat" channels and “The standing stone" district near the village of Petokladentsi, a Necropolis of seven hills, etc.

The people here are mainly Catholics and there are two Catholic churches in the town, as well as one Orthodox Church. In Belene there are community centers, an authentic folklore ensemble, folk dance schools, theater group and children's theater group, a group for old urban songs, male vocal group and a workshop.
