Rila monastery has a special status of a separate settlement, which has a population of about 65 people. It is located in southwestern Bulgaria and is part of Kyustendil Municipality. The monastery was founded during the tenth century along Rila River from St. Ivan Rilski and today is among the most important monuments in the country, included in the register of UNESCO.
The monastery is placed near the village of Pastra. Built on five floors, the monastery has a ground floor with a museum and a cookhouse. In the monastery there are many old books, manuscripts and church icons and coins. The monastery is among the one hundred national tourist sites in Bulgaria.
