Varna Beach in Blue Flag 2010 Pilot Phase
For the first time a city beach in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna is included in the pilot phase of the global Blue Flag program. The Blue Flag is the most recognized eco-label and a standard in tourism, which is awarded to the best managed beaches and marinas around the world. Some of the investment work to be done in Varna this year includes the opening of a temporary waters ports center, the restoration of the beach strip of the Ribarski beach, the finishing of a project for a new sewerage system, new markings and the lamp posts.
In order for a beach to be awarded a Blue Flag it must comply with 32 criteria related to the ecological education and information, the quality of the water, the environmental management, the safety and the services”, explained Dr. Iliya Shterev – national coordinator of Blue Flag for Bulgaria. Every year the international coordination of the program performs a detailed assessment of the Blue Flag candidates, every time focusing on a different set of obligatory criteria. The results are given for consideration to the program’s international jury. This year over 3,600 beaches from around the world have applied for the Blue Flag program. Bulgaria has 10 applicants, two of which are the beaches of the resorts of Albena and Sunny Day.
The Blue Flag program is a voluntary certification procedure for beaches and marinas managed by the international non-government organization Foundation for Environmental Education whose members are 55 countries from around the world.
