Sofia - the Manhattan of Bulgaria

Trud Daily, February 2005

New neighborhoods with new high-leveled buildings up to 26 meters, business city with 32 floored skyscrapers, six new regions, free from parked cars pavements, green parks and closed industrial zones. That is the ideal future of Sofia for the next 20 years according to the new Central city plan.

After 5 years of debates, the government finally accepted the plan. The mayor Stefan Sofianski defended it in front of the ministers. However, the plan was made in 2001 when Sofia had 1, 3 million people. Their number now is almost 2 millions that was not pointed out.

The city will expand in northern direction with new buildings. The skyscrapers are along the Todor Alexandrov Boulevard. The yellow paves will be a zone free for pedestrians. The cars will be stored in underground garages, which have to start constructions this year.

The new blocks and office buildings are obliged to have parking places. The garages will not be transformed into shops and cafes. If the owner wants to change its function, he will have to pay an annual tax to the municipal.

The new city plan of Sofia plans to divide the capital in 6 parts. The first one will be Central - “Oborishte”, “Triadica”, “Krasno selo”, “Serdika”, “Sredec” and “Vazrajdane”. The rest of the regions will be formed according o the outgoing highways. To the south-eastern direction along the Tsarigradsko Shousse Boulevard, to the northern direction - along the Slivnica Blvd., to the north-eastern direction along the Botevgradsko Shousse Blvd. and Rojen Blvd. The most attractive terrain for construction works will be the now existing region “Studentski”, where on a space of 7000 ha three floor buildings will be constructed.

Five skyscrapers will be built in the center of Sofia. Together with the smaller buildings, they will form the Sofia City along the Todor Alexandrov Blvd. The entrance of the city will be formed by two twin buildings on Bratia Miladinovi str. High leveled buildings will take place along Todor Alexandrov and in the site between Bulbank and Hristo Botev Blvd. as well as on the metro stations. Two more are planned to be build in Lozenetz and behind the Kempinski-Zogravski Hotel.
The plan is new roads to be build and the infrastructure of the city to be improved. At the moment the streets are situated on three circles and are crossed by road junctions. New boulevards will be built in order to connect the different parts of the city on the diagonal.

The second city circle – Bulgaria Blvd., Slivnica and Opalchenska Str. must be completed. The Central and Stochna Train Stations will be connected with Danail Nikolaev Blvd. Okolovrastno shousse will be the main city highway, which will be relieved from the transit passing cars. The new streets will be build according to the European transport corridors 4 - from Vidin to Greece, 8 - from Varna to Skopie and 10 - from Beograd to Istanbul. They will be build to cross the southern slopes of Vitosha Mountain.
