Sofia Fashion Street Goes Pedestrian-Friendly

www.novinite.com, 27th December 2005

Although the creation of pedestrian-friendly urban environments is still in its infancy in Sofia, the capital's fashion Vitosha boulevard may remain forever closed for motor vehicles.

The key shopping centre along Vitosha Blvd. has been turned into a pedestrian zone from 24 December 2005 to 3 January 2006 and Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov seeks to discourage any kind of wheeled traffic.

"I want to turn Vitosha boulevard into a zone, completely free of motor vehicles, all the time," Boyko Borissov said.

Nearly all of the streets in downtown Sofia are open to motorized traffic, Pirotska street being one of the few where cars do not intrude on the pedestrians.
