Enlargement plans for Bulgaria's Mountain Resorts

The Sofia Echo, 19th June 2006

Bulgaria plans to invest over one billion leva in enlarging Borovets ski resort with 140 km of ski tracks and with new hotels having accommodation capacity of over 25 000 beds.

Samokov mayor Angel Nikolov said that the municipality was also planning the construction of a new resort in the region alongside the Iskar River. In a few years Samokov, a town located close to Borovets, would have a large business park and a modern apartment complex, Capital newspaper said.

The execution of these projects depends on Sofia's success in the 2014 Winter Olympics bid, Capital said. Despite organisation and infrastructure problems, investors also show interest in the projects.

Contract 99, one of the companies involved in the project, said that it had already started negotiations for the provision of lifts for the new resort. By the end of June the company would present its final business and construction plans and lift construction would begin in August, Contact 99 executive director Plamen Gochev said.

Borosport JSC, the company managing the Borovets resort, had approved enlargement plans, Capital said.
