Bulgaria ready to leave its past behind and join Europe

In an article named Iron Curtain Lifted Slowly On Country Brimming With European Allure, the San Francisco Chronicle describes latest developments in Bulgaria, on its way to EU entry.

According to the article Bulgaria was expected to become one of the new hotspots of European tourism. The country still had a long way to go but offered “fascinating, unspoiled… destinations for slightly adventurous travelers”, the article said.

Bulgaria managed to get rid of its Soviet Union past ties slower that countries like Slovenia and the Czech Republic, San Francisco Chronicle reported. Its pro-eastern image was already outdated, however.

The author points out he had the chance to see old churches, taste a wide variety of wines, visit rural areas and examine archaeological treasures. In addition, the country offered its Black Sea beaches and coastal resorts.

Bulgaria has been consistently turning westward with its NATO membership and expected EU entry, the article said.

Such developments were expected to further strengthen the country’s economy. Still, improvement to the tourism services and mainly customer care were needed, the article said.
