Second line of Sofia's underground railway goes into operation
The second line of the Sofia underground railway was opened on August 31, 2012. The 17 km long line with 11 stations runs from the Lozenets quarter in the southern part of Sofia through the city centre to the Nadezhda quarter in the north.
It can carry 130,000 passengers daily by 18 new energy-saving trains. About a third of the capital's residents are expected to use the metro, reducing surface traffic by 20 percent.
"The second line has improved transport system of Sofia and at the same time reduce environmental pollution and improve the quality of life of thousands of people", said the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, who came to Bulgaria for the opening ceremony.
"The completion of this project proves that Sofia is a modern city with a desire to invest in their future and the future of its citizens. This project is a good example of sustainable and integrated public transport and its planned extension to the airport will provide fast connection to the rest of Europe and the world", Barroso said.
