Japan provides 2.5 million dollars for Thracian Art Centre
On 18 July a meeting has been held in Haskovo, between the parties in the project for building a Thracian Art Museum in the East Rhodopes, Haskovo Municipality informs. Partners in the project are the Ministry of Culture, National Institute for Cultural Monuments and Haskovo Municipality. The financing of 2.5 million dollars has been provided by the Japanese government. At the request of the Bulgarian government the Japanese government has decided to carry out a survey for a project for the realization of the initiative. The survey was carried out by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). After preliminary discussions between the partners a protocol was drawn up and signed for the construction of the museum centre, the Agency announced.
The subject of the survey was the Thracian tomb situated North-East of Alexandrovo village near the town of Haskovo. According to the experts the tomb should not be open to the public in order to better preserve the cultural and historical heritage. The objective is to preserve the valuable murals which need to be studied, conserved and restored. Therefore, with a grant provided by the Japanese government, the construction of a museum centre of Thracian art is planned which will be an exact copy of the tomb in Alexandrovo. The Museum will also house other relics of the history and culture of ancient Thrace.
The project includes the construction of a museum centre, technological equipment for research of the tomb and the cultural heritage, construction of a copy of the tomb and an exhibition hall, as well as the furniture and equipment for the premises. “We expect this project will contribute to encouraging laboratory research of tombs and the valuable Thracian cultural heritage and will increase the interest of Bulgarian and foreign parties in the education and research related to the culture of ancient Thrace” JICA stated.
