Archeologists Find Celtic Presence in the Area of Rousse
During excavation works at the Roman fortress Sexaginta Prista near the town of Rousse in the autumn of 2009 archeologists found pieces of Celtic pottery. This proves that there was Celtic presence in the area but there is still no proof whether the traces are from Celtic traders or from residents of the fortress.
During the last archeological season 25 square meters of the fortress were researched. The area is full of completely preserved layers up to the beginning of the fourth century as some of the discoveries of the archeologists include Roman coins from 1st-4th centuries and pottery.
The research confirms the site’s chronology – under the layer from the fourth century was Apollo’s temple /II-III century/ and in the earliest layer on the hill there was a Thracian sanctuary dating back to the 1st century BC.
