Ski legends will open ski season in Bansko, officials reported. The 3-fold Olympic and 2-fold World ski champion Alberto Tomba will open the ski season in Bansko. The genius from Bologna will be the VIP at the official opening on the 14th of December and will symbolically race down the ski-run named after him.
“La Bomba” became its Godfather in 2003 when he first came to Banderishka poliana and started the season. Tomba will now set foot below Todorka exactly 5 days before having his 47th birthday. As a metter of fact, the year 2013 had also its start in Bansko for the slalom virtuoso and tireless playboy - on the 19th of January when within the 2nd World Day of Snow of the International Ski Federation he arrived for the 5th edition of the project "Learn skiing" and gave his face and name to a gondola cabin.
As a piece to a reminder let's mention that the legendary skier was in Pirin in 2012, when he landed in a helicopter for the unprecedented World Cup starts for men and ladies. Tomba was in Bansko also an year earlier for the men starts. However, just few people know that his first visit in Bulgaria took place in 1983 for the World Cup in Borovets.
Tomba will be joined by 4 other great ski names at the opening of the season in Bansko. By tradition we will have here Marc Girardelli - the only 5-fold winner of the Big Crystal Globe - who is alredy kind of Bansko fellow citizen. The №1 Bulgarian skier of all times Petar Popangelov will keep him company.
The glorious French Luc Alphand who opened the season in the skirts in Pirin 3 years ago has also confirmed taking part in the event and is also about to become part of the Bansko "family". And he is a real sport phenomenon - he was the winner of the Big World Cup in alpine skiing in 1997 but besides that he also won the most prestigious car race in the world - the Dakar rally in 2006.
The ski legends will take part in the attractive competition "Win Champions", which is held every year at the opening of the ski season. Any fan of skiing registered on the website of the resort will be able to race down the ski-run, on which the great skiers have skied, and try to improve their time. Of course, the opening will be held with music, gifts, games and culinary delights.
