Restoration Works of Boyana Church End
On October 2nd the ending of the restoration works on the frescoes of the Boyana Church was officially announced at a ceremony in the church’s yard. The ceremony also marked the unveiling of a new slab with the names of the sponsors of the restoration works.
The unique monument of Bulgarian culture – the Boyana Church is the first site chosen to be restored under the initiative Bulgaria’s Eternal Buildings. The aim of the initiative is to support, restore and preserve monuments of culture and sites of historical importance.
The official ceremony was attended by the Bulgarian Minister of Culture Professor Stefan Danailov, by the Director of the National Museum of History Professor Bozhidar Dimitrov, by the Dean of the Faculty of Restoration at the National Academy of Arts Professor Grigoriy Grigorov who is also the head of the group responsible for the restoration works, and by many more.
BULGARIAN PROPERTIES are one of the sponsors who made possible the full restoration of the medieval art and architecture masterpieces and the sponsors’ ceremony was attended by the company’s Executive Director Mihail Chobanov.
During the restoration works which lasted 2 years (2006-2008) an amazing discovery was made – the experts managed to read the name of the painter – the Bulgarian icon painter Vasiliy and his apprentice Dimitar.
The church is among the few medieval monuments which prove the significant contribution of Bulgarian monument art to Europe’s cultural heritage. The Boyana Church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
