New Highway to Be Built at the Foot of the Rila Mountain
Equest Investment Fund and the Sultan of Oman, who announced the start of the Super Borovets project, are planning to build a Rila Highway as well. The 80-kilometer highway is planned to pass through Samokov, Vakarel and Vitinya and will connect the highways Hemus, Trakiya and Struma. The future motorway will reduce the time needed to get from the center of Sofia to the ski resort of Borovets to 30 minutes. Angel Nikolov - the Mayor of the Municipality of Samokov announced that the distance to the five border checkpoints of Nevrokop, Kulata, Zlatarevo, Stanke Lisichkovo and Gyueshevo will be reduced by 50 km which will facilitate the traffic to Sofia. According to the preliminary plans the tender for the concession of the motorway is expected to start next year.
The first sod of the 500-million-euro project near Samokov was turned by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Assen Gagauzov, by the Executive Director of the company Rila-Samokov 2004 Georgi Krumov, by the Director of the State Fund of the Sultan of Oman Varit Mubarak Said Al Harousi and by the Manager of Glavbolgarstroy Simeon Peshev. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and the leader of the NDSV political movement Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha were also present at the ceremony.
The project includes the construction of 19 ski runs with total length of 42 km, 10 lifts two of which cabin with total capacity of 37,000 people. The real estate and facilities to be built will include low-rise holiday complexes, villas and houses, as well as two golf clubs, 12 tennis courts and 5 football fields. There will also be an option to get to the winter resort by helicopter as a total of 5 helicopter pads will be built in the area. By next winter the first lift to the Markudzhika area will be ready, as well as a parking lot for 1,114 cars.
