Sofia Tube Extension on Schedule - Official
The extension of Sofia's sole underground line to the residential district of Mladost is progressing according to schedule, the city's deputy mayor in charge of transport Velizar Stoilov said on Friday.
Japan's Taisei Corporation, which won the tender to build the extension, is working simultaneously to reinforce the downtown station at Sheraton hotel and the new station at the Sofia University.
At the same time, one of the two tunnels between the university and the station at the national stadium has been completed, Stoilov said.
The extension of the underground, which now runs from the Lyulin residential district to downtown, is expected to be completed on schedule at end-2008.
To further ease some of the traffic congestion in the Bulgarian capital, the city hall is mulling the installation of a centralised traffic lights switchboard and information panels warning drivers of traffic jams ahead and advising them to take other routes.
Given the city's existing street grid, it is virtually impossible to redirect the traffic in such a way as to ease congestion in its central part, so the city hall is also considering plans to build extensive parking lots that would act as buffers, limiting the number of cars in the city centre.
