Medieval Fortress to Be Built near Aheloy
A historic complex reviving the time of King Simeon the Great will be built near the Bourgas village of Aheloy. The mega-project is dedicated to the battle of Aheloy which took place in 917, when Simeon the Great defeated the Byzantine army.
The first sod of the complex was turned at an official ceremony. It will occupy the area of 2.2 ha exactly where the battle was held. The complex will be surrounded by a fortress built in the style characteristic of the early Middle Ages. According to the preliminary calculation some 4.5 million euro will be spent on its construction.
"The funds will be allotted by powerful Russian companies," said former military, members of the newly established Voingroup cooperative which is contracted to build the fortress. It is expected that the complex will be opened on May 6, 2006, or in August 2007 at the latest when the 1090th anniversary of the famous battle will be celebrated.
