St. Forty Martyrs Church in Veliko Tarnovo welcomes tourists after 30 years
For the first time in 30 years tourists will have access to St. Forty Martyrs Church in Veliko Tarnovo, Northern Bulgaria. The great Tsar Ivan Assen II built the church in 1230. It houses the tombs of the prominent Bulgarian sovereign Tsar Kaloyan and of St. Sava of Serbia, and exhibits original columns and frescos. In 1908 the Proclamation of Bulgaria’s Independence was read out in St. Forty Martyrs Church. The amount spent for the restoration of the medieval church is EUR 1.5 million. In 2007 EUR 100 thousand will be allocated to the restoration of original murals. Some of them have been moved back to the church, while others are kept in a museum. The historic church will now be added to the key routes of Bulgarian and foreign tourists.
