The Lighthouse of Cape Shabla – a Tourist Attraction
Besides the beautiful sea Bulgaria's easternmost point, Cape Shabla, also attracts many tourists with its famous lighthouse. The Municipality wants the lighthouse to become accessible for tourists as a tourist attraction.
The lighthouse has a long history. It was built in 1851 by Austrian experts at the request of the then Turkish government. In Roman times, on the same spot, there was a structure carrying out the same functions, as well as an ancient Phoenician port called Ankaria. Sailors used to see the light coming from the lighthouse while far away in the sea.
Today, in the era of GPS systems and modern technology, the lighthouse starts losing its real functions but its mysterious ambiance still attracts tourists.
At the moment it is at the disposal of the Bulgarian Navy and it is on a special regime as it can be visited only with the explicit permission of the Navy Headquarters.
