06.06.2008 Plovdiv Once Again Becomes Bulgaria’s Art Capital

Trud Daily

45 artists from all over Bulgaria are to compete for the annual M-Tel awards for contemporary art. They will be awarded on June 18th in the town of Plovdiv, in one of the former tobacco warehouses which has been turned into a modern gallery. The exhibition, which is held for a third year in a row, has turned into one of the few democratic forums in Bulgaria – a worthy place where the avant-gardists can express themselves. The competition develops and becomes more modern each year just like Bulgarian art. In 2008 mainly selected are installations, video art, and other contemporary forms of art which are a far cry from the interior and applicable art. “This is the first time the big exhibition and the cocktail are held outside Sofia – in a truly modern industrial space, similar to the contemporary galleries around the world”, said the newest member of the jury – Plovdiv gallerist Katrin Sarieva. The competition will not divide the genres into painting, graphics and sculpture. “We will award three first prizes – to three artists who show three completely different trends in Bulgarian art”, the main organizer and project originator Irina Batkova said.

The exhibition turned into the only serious view of Bulgarian contemporary art. Neither the state nor the artist unions have the will and means to do this for our artists. For the first time this year the event will welcome an art critic of a global scale. Mark Glodke – curator of the programme dedicated to video art in the most prestigious commercial art exhibition – Art Basel, is arriving to Plovdiv.
