British Expats to Impact Bulgarian Politics with Foreign Club
According to the Treaty of Lisbon every citizen of a European member state country is allowed the same rights in their adopted country as local citizens. On the basis of this Treaty on October 18th 2010 British expacts living in the Varna village of Avren formed a foreign club – the first of its kind in Bulgaria, which is part of the party Drugata Bulgaria (The Other Bulgaria).
The new club will have two co-chairpersons – one British and one Bulgarian. The goal of the party is EU expacts living in Bulgaria to get adequate and just political representation on the territory of their residence. One of the main objectives of the new club is participation in the local elections in 2011.
Currently there are some 20 British families living in the Municipality of Avren. However, their exact number is unknown as they are not obliged to register.
