2014-02-24   |  BULGARIAN PROPERTIES & Nasam-Natam.com

On 2nd of March in the village of Shiroka Luka near the ski resort of Pamporovo will be held one of the biggest mummers holidays in Bulgaria, named Presponedelnik by the locals. Traditionally, the festival is held on the first Sunday of March, on the eve of Ash Lent. This is one of the most interesting holidays in Bulgaria, characterized with cheerful spirit and melody of the Rhodopean mountain bells. The local people in the village are very excited and many tourists come to see the mummer's parade in the only street of Shiroka Luka.

The mummers are colourfully dressed and equipped with bells wooden swords which with they chase away the evil spirits. The mummer masks reflect the traditional characters from the fairy tales – king, gypsy, bears, brides and children. The mummers perform the rituals of killing the king, resurrection of nature and welcoming of the spring. The mummers group in Shiroka Luka village was established more than 45 years ago and currently numbers 35 people.

During the celebration the mummers chase the evil from the houses and people's souls with songs, bagpipes, cries and festive buzz, and in this way they are welcoming the coming spring!
