Wonders of Dobrudja Attract Tourists even from Japan

Article by Nikolay Genov, Standart News, 19th December 2005

Unique monasteries are cut into the rocks near The Suhata Reka - a river whose bed fills with water only in rainy years

The northeastern region of Bulgaria, also known as Dobrudja, is famous for its vast wheat fields, which have been feeding the country for centuries now. Over the past few years, the natural beauty of the Black Sea coast at the capes of Shabla and Kaliakra has become very popular. Now, it attracts tourists from all over the world, even from Japan. They come here to enjoy the serenity of the Shabla Lake, the beautiful rock formations in Kamen Bryag and the pre-historic stone architecture of The Big Island, in the middle of the Durankulak Lake.

However, the regions of Dobrudja along the Danube are not so well known, although they are just as beautiful. These regions have preserved some unique steppe vegetation and some of the rarest species of the Bulgarian fauna. It is a wonderful experience to go trekking in some of the canyons and dry gorges of the Dobrudja plateau. And you will be surprised to find out that the Suhata Reka, which goes through the whole region of Dobrudja, comes back to life in rainy years only. The region along its bed is inhabited by twenty-one endangered species.
The far northeast of Bulgaria also boasts rich historical and cultural heritage. This is the idyllic world, described in the novels of famous Bulgarian classic Yordan Yovkov. If you happen to pass by the village of Krassen, you definitely should visit the junior high school, founded by Yovkov himself. The team of Standart wishes you a nice tour round Dobrudja!
