The Rose Festival in Karlovo

As we announced in the first week of June, Karlovo has become self proclaimed capital of the most beautiful and aromatic flower – the rose. This festival is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the beauty and heritage of this region of Bulgaria and its present day attractions.

From the 1st of June to the 4th June all citizens of, and visitors to Karlovo had the opportunity to become part of this wonderful celebration of beauty and charm and to experience unforgettable moments before impressive background of the majestic Central Balkan Mountain.

The festival program included many theatrical performances during the whole week and a music and dance show for children. The opening of a crafts exhibition was greeted with great interest – over 15 different categories of crafts were presented. All the categories represent both the traditional and modern Bulgarian handicraft – Bulgarian embroidery with its intricate geometric figures, Bulgarian rugs and carpets with their vibrant colours, exquisitely painted Bulgarian ceramics, finely ornamented fretwork and superbly fashioned Bulgarian jewelry, the unique attar of roses with the intoxicating fragrance of the whole Valley of Roses.

The official inauguration of the Festival, which started with a speech by the mayor of the town, saw many people gathered at the center, and the subsequent crowning of the 16-year-old, beautiful Queen of the Rose. The traditional harvesting of rose petals in the rose fields near the town and the demonstration of rose oil distillery in the Buhalov Han (one of the house-museums in the old part of the town) was incredible. In the evening, everyone enjoyed a live concert by one of Bulgaria’s pop music bands.
