Sofia Goes Retro for World Tourism Day

www.novinite.com, 27th September 2006

A retro tram transports Sofia's citizens to mark World Tourism Day on September 27.

Sofia's deputy mayor Tzvetan Tzvetanov and the representative of the State Tourism Agency Mario al-Jeburi presented the route for the tourist tram trip on a central tram juncture in the capital.

"We intend to equip the retro tram with sound system and to make it a permanent tourist attraction for Sofia's visitors. With its help tourists will be introduced to capital's sights," said Tzvetanov.

The vintage tram motorcar was manufactured in 1935 and was revamped to its original looks in 1999. The tramcar operated from 1936 to 1967. Currently "Tramcar" Bulgaria is renovating yet another retro tram.

September 27 is celebrated as World Tourism Day since 1980. The purpose of this day is to display awareness that tourism is vital to the international community and to show how it affects the social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
