An Interview by Desislava Stoyanova, (Bulgarian Properties Elhovo Office) with Michael Weavers, distiller of the best rakia in Southern Bulgaria!

What made you decide to participate in the competition?
"Last year my Bulgarian friend participated in the competition and came third. After tasting my rakia, he encouraged me to take part this year. All I had to do to enter was take a bottle of my home made rakia to the Mayor a couple of days before the competition and register myself. I wasn't really expecting to win anything".

What happened next?
"The judges tasted the entries from all the villages in our area before choosing the winners. I didn't realise that I had won until my friend patted me on the back, explaining that I was the winner!”

What was your prize?
"A small wooden box with a selection of cork screws and bottle openers. The biggest prize for me though was the fact that the whole of our village celebrated with me. It was a great feeling, because there is a lot of rivalry between the villages for this completion. For the first time I felt like a proper Bulgarian. We celebrated most of the night and got through plenty of the winning brew!"

Will you enter again next year
"Yes, but I would like to enter the wine category next time."

Finally, what is the secret to your rakia?
"My wife and I worked together mixing a couple of types of grapes from our vines. They were very sweet, and we didn't need to add any sugar. The actual fermentation process is a trade secret, along with the secret Bulgarian ingredients we added. I still can't believe how good it tasted at the end. I should also thank my wife for her help and support!"
