Opposite to what you might think Bansko is not only snowy slopes, skiing and après-ski bars. It offers a plethora of other interesting activities all year round: you can play golf on the nearby golf course, you can go horse riding, pamper your senses with spa procedures, go hiking or have a lovely picnic. Or visit the famous Bansko Jazz Fest 2009 which is an annual event helping extend Bansko’s holiday season into the summer.

The event was originally inspired by Dr Emil Iliev's idea to transform this little town into a centre of significant cultural importance. Since the first festival in 1998, the number of participants and quality of performances has been steadily increasing.

The objectives of the Bansko Jazz Festival are to give aspiring Bulgarian musicians a stage alongside artists from all nationalities and to lay out a festival that welcomes, as they say, 'the free people'.

After the first festival in 1998 Bansko has been winning new friends each year ever since. The format includes events on the main stage in the middle of town and informal jazz cafe sessions and jamming at local hotels and venues.

This year Bansko Jazz Fest will be held from 8th August 2009 until 13th August 2009 which means six days of non-stop music, high spirits and improvisation. This year the festival will present 22 bands from 15 countries including Hungary, Holland, Poland, England, the USA and many more.
